I remember hearing about reading fees when I first looked into submitting my writing, and thought “I’m broke, no go.” And then I read your comments about all money flowing to the writer. I have never paid a reading fee because of that.

I wonder if the rise of AI powered spam is going to force things to change slightly: a token ($1-2) fee just as an anti-spam measure? So the fee is not to gain revenue but clearly just to stop total crap from showing up?

Fuck fees. Those assholes are just looking to make money on the unpaid labor of others.

I agree with you but in 2000 I paid $50 to enter Writer's Digest Magazine's 'National Self-Published Book Award' contest. There were, like, I think, 1k entrants & I won for my cyberpunk Acts of the Apostles. $500, plus a bunch of stickers to put on my books & a few WD cover stories @ $100 per.

It's largely impossible to submit poetry without paying reading fees anymore. To get a book published you generally have to win a contest and all contests have reading fees. This is a reason I don't submit, but at the same time these publications are not scamming writers.

Scientist here and I think we’re doing it all wrong as journals increasingly charge authors to publish. All while not paying reviewers and editors.

It’s the Bester & Heinlein story contest story, right? (from en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_...)

Still mad as hell that some of these fee-farms are considered “legitimate” and even prestigious for the SFF short fiction circuit. I got duped once.

100% money should always flow to the writer, not from them.
