Lucas deserved neither award, though. If we were to de-Allen the '78 Academy Awards, I would give director to Herbert Ross and Original Screenplay to Neil Simon. But, all around it wasn't a great year. Allen's work was the best in these categories, even if he was (and IS) problematic as fuck.

Nobody ever much talks about how Stephen Tyler formally adopted a 16-year-old, got her pregnant, got her an abortion. Or Jimmy Page and that 15-year-old he kept locked up in a CA hotel for months. Allen is a complete creep, to be sure, but Lord knows he ain't walking that road alone.

Well, Doc was always a good writer, even if sometimes a bit on the nose, his dialogue was pronounceable and less predictable than George's.
