It's also true even if you *credit* Roberts' own self-conceptualization as an "institutionalist". On that metric -- preserving and maintaining the perception and dignity of the Court as a dispassionate citadel of law -- it is hard to imagine someone who has failed as spectacularly as he has.

Another way of thinking about this is that he and his co-partisans have abdicated judicial power when exercising their offices causes too much discomfort.
