It’s hard to avoid a title dark or violent, but The City We Became by NK Jemison is good urban fantasy. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is very clever and not dark overall. The Magicians by Lev Grossman is great, a triology that’s sort of an adult alternative Harry Potter

I'll check those out, thanks! I don't mind darkness or violence - I just want a good plot in addition to the dark and violent. And I do have a thing for uplifting or redemptive endings (doesn't have to end happy, just hopeful). 🙂
