In French the term is "flying cigar" (cigare volant), which made me think UFOs had a different shape over there. Cigare Volant is also the name of a fictional French restaurant often mentioned on Frasier.

Fair enough. And opening the nomination to a whole new field of mostly unknown contestants at this point, I assume, would also be a disaster. Do you think a quick consolidation around Harris would reassure skeptics without excessive disruption, or is it just better to stick with Biden?

Even if it was an off night, even if debating skills aren't relevant to the presidency anyhow, it fed into the existing narrative and will be remembered. And he's not likely to get better between now and age 86. It was a disaster.

Frankly, reading a speech from a prompter is different from debating. On the other hand, presidents frequently have to read speeches from prompters, but once elected they never have to debate again. It's not a presidential skill.

It seems to be a common GOP practice to take a priori arguments ("doing X will achieve y"), then doing X and asserting that Y was achieved without checking to see if that was true. "We grew the economy" (i.e., cut taxes) and "chastened Iran" (i.e., walked out of JCPOA).
