The idea that in order to matter a woman's story must end in triumph is so deeply reactionary, and I think it underpins so much of this "feminist retelling" cottage industry.
i've actually been thinking about this so much ππsome in relation to the fact that women who triumph & are also sickos in their quest to get there are seen as morally reprehensible & "unlikeable" but also in an arc of a chinese translated tragic novel i got called GOODBYE MY PRINCESS
It really follows the same energy as 'a woman can't be a real hero until she's been truly tortured on screen'. I don't know how, but it feels like they're on the same trajectory.
I think about this a lot in poor decolonial work too. It comes with good intentions but the fact of the matter is oppression is bad because itβs bad, not because itβs victims are inherently better morally
