Growing up we had a sign that said “the cats are…” and you flipped the sign from “not lying” to “lying” when you fed them in the morning.

#TheAcolyte has really picked up speed, and I respect the enthusiasm for end-of-episode cliffhangers.
I don’t even mind if the “central mystery” ends up being “disappointing”, because the journey has been fun.

Now I’m 40, and whenever I cry these days some part of me thinks “Ha! I still got it.”

“Sometimes I’d give my soul to cry like that.” “I hate it!” “You wouldn’t hate it if you couldn’t do it anymore.” That exchange shook my world as a tween: the idea that someone could a) want to cry, but b) be unable to.

I’ve been reading the Oz books to the kids, and Baum’s take on gender (and identity/bodies in general) is fascinating. I specifically have been wondering “Has Emily St. James read these? Are the Oz books egg literature?”

I’d include Young Guns and that ‘90s Three Musketeers movie before I’d think of half of the movies on this list - to say nothing of The Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink.

My boomer mom has told me all her good drug stories since well before I had done any fun drugs myself. Her stories are why I have never been able to stomach tequila.

It's really weird (it's not really weird) how states that ban abortions are also states where women can't get leave to take care of their children.

Love that one. McGoohan does smug disdain so well. I just saw the McGoohan-as-spy ep for the first time! He says “be seeing you” and in one scene wears a navy jacket w/ white piping. It’s a silly episode but real fun.

There’s carnage everywhere. Whole departments disappear. Janitorial & security services get outsourced. The only evidence our heroes find is a trail of six-figure invoices.

The shift is fascinating. I don’t know all the causes, but in ‘72, Nixon (and later other GOP candidates) used opposition to abortion to siphon Catholic voters away from Dems. (Of course, Nixon himself thought that the possibility of a mixed-race baby was ample justification for abortion)

Pre-Roe, the anti-choice movement was largely Catholic & left-wing. There were plenty of “the government is sending out kids to kill & die in Vietnam, now they want the right to kill unborn babies‽” takes. By the ‘80s, it had become a mostly Protestant, right-wing movement.

Anyway, he had chronic pain, and wanted to grow and smoke his own (low-THC, high-CBD!) weed, in line w/ WA state law. But federal gun law prohibits anyone who uses cannabis from owning a gun. So he couldn’t keep his guns and use cannabis w/o committing a federal crime. 2/

You might be happy to know that thanks in part to the capital gains tax, we’re now the *2nd* most regressive (thank you Florida)! Which is, of course, why a millionaire is running the initiative this year to repeal the cap gains tax. (vote no on I-2109, btw)

There’s no inconvenience rich folks won’t pay to get out of, is there. Incidentally, this is why Andy Warhol liked Coca Cola - because a rich person simply cannot pay more to get a better can of coke than anyone can get at their corner store.

All the stuff about New Yorkers is great - the busker, the vox populi montage, the hecklers. I remembered JK Simmons being in much more of the film than he is, which just goes to show how impactful his performance is. And that upside-down kiss is maybe the best kiss in the history of movies.

It stands out for me as the season most like a Dickens novel: you can tell from Two Tonys how the season *must* end up, and the weight of that inevitability makes all the moving parts & digressions that much more compelling.

I’d say they’re worth a dedicated trip, like cherry blossoms or an eclipse. The first time I saw fireflies I was walking by myself. For a moment I thought I was hallucinating. I’d say they didn’t look like I expected, but… I don’t know what else I could have expected.

… when it started I thought “ah yes, dark comedy and light social satire. Another solid, if not transcendent, premise.” Holy smokes. Ncuti Gatwa’s laugh/scream at the end is perfect. It’s both completely in line with the history of the character, and entirely unique to Gatwa’s Doctor…

Doctor Who is firing on all cylinders. I wasn’t wild about the first 2 eps, but the last 3 have been quite a run. - Boom was great, but straightforward. A meat & potatoes DW premise & execution. - 73 yards is a delightfully twisty, ambitious experiment. - Then Dot and Bubble…
