A novel of muffled motivations, appetising tension, and the introduction of the toasted cheese sandwich to Ireland’s pubs. Me on Long Island, “a masterclass in everything Colm Tóibín can do”.

Flann O'Brien nicely acknowledged Graham Greene, an early champion of his work, in his dedication to The Hard Life

Jeeves is back, on a road trip in present-day New Jersey and upstate New York… Finding this a hoot so far.

“Life becomes death, and it is as if this death has owned this life all along. Death without warning. Which is to say: life stops. And it can stop at any moment.” -- The Invention of Solitude (1982) I wrote an obituary for Paul Auster:

Among my fondest reading memories is working my way through Paul Auster’s novels when I was 19 or 20 years old - in those Faber editions with the blue spines. The Trilogy, Music of Chance, Leviathan, Moon Palace. They had a profound impact on my sensibility and remain a key influence. RIP.

That’s great to hear — it’s an excellent festival and I’m sure you’ll enjoy York. Is your event the one chaired by Gavin Esler on 9 June? (Your name doesn’t appear on the festival website, as far as I can see.)

He’s a great raconteur. Really hope we’ll see a memoir at some point, though he’s clearly still fully occupied with core PSB business.

Thanks, have heard it – like eavesdropping on a bunch of mates reminiscing, but in a good way.

“We are a bit like two halves of one brain,” says Neil Tennant of his forty-year collaboration with Chris Lowe. That, and a bit like a veteran comedy duo in this engaging and entertaining documentary. Highly recommended.

“I think that there’s honestly a direct line between me seeing Hollywood Shuffle, and me being drawn to the novel Erasure and making American Fiction.”—Cord Jefferson in an excellent conversation with Hollywood Shuffle director Robert Townsend

“I don’t want to be Eddie Murphy. I just want to be me.” Before American Fiction, there was Hollywood Shuffle… Revisited this still very funny satire from way back.

Watched In A Lonely Place (1950) this evening. An incredibly insightful, powerful film about violence in the trappings of a conventional noir, I can’t recommend it highly enough. No surprise given that it’s based on a Dorothy B Hughes book, she of The Expendable Man. boxd.it/6gQQwT

“Bon qu’a ça.” (“That’s all I’m good for.”) In 1985 Libération asked 400 authors why they wrote. The pithiest response was from Samuel Beckett, born #OTD in 1906
