I just had this conversation on BLAH. I think that the source of most non-insane objections to the tail end of GoT stem from the plot necessitating spectacular battles, which necessitated money and time and focus, which necessitated cutting other things to accommodate that, incl. whole episodes.

yeah, the last season had a lot of hurry up, we need to get this in (FWIW, I did NOT object to Daenerys going HAM on King's Landing, I always thought that was the inevitable climax)

People did miss the methodical, journeying feeling of it, as much as a lot of book fans complain about that shit without end when it comes to A Feast for Crows. I wouldn't be surprised if that fan sentiment played some small role in their approach, actually.
