When I reached out for this interview, I hadn't put together that Daniels had just lost his partner of 30 years, the actor Ian Gelder, barely a month earlier. I wouldn't have asked if I'd known! But he was so generous with his time and, as you'll see, with his emotions. (He's a big horror nerd too.)

Gift link to my interview with the magnificent and extremely gracious Ben Daniels about his delightfully evil work on this season of Interview with the Vampire. One of my favorite interviews I've ever done.

I told Ewan Mitchell that Prince Aemond's conduct during his nude scene was scarier than Aemond on his dragon. He agreed but emphasized something different than I expected: not Aemond's coldness toward Aegon, but toward the sex worker he'd just been with. I love being legit enlightened by interviews

Today I figured out gift links. Here's my review of last night's superb House of the Dragon, a show selling exactly what I'm in the market to buy.

People did miss the methodical, journeying feeling of it, as much as a lot of book fans complain about that shit without end when it comes to A Feast for Crows. I wouldn't be surprised if that fan sentiment played some small role in their approach, actually.

I just had this conversation on BLAH. I think that the source of most non-insane objections to the tail end of GoT stem from the plot necessitating spectacular battles, which necessitated money and time and focus, which necessitated cutting other things to accommodate that, incl. whole episodes.

Many such cases. I'm always going to be partial to the original for opening up so much completely untrod territory but an argument can be made that GoT walked (sprawled) so that HotD could run (adapt one section of a novella).

And oh yeah, Dr. Britt Baker DMD is their other favorite wrestler after Orange Cassiday, so boy did THAT go over huge :)

Everyone lost their minds. Britt was always my kid's other favorite after OC, so they were OVERJOYED. Also, I'm sorry, I've had you muted for ages to avoid wrestling spoilers lol, I just realized it!

Other observations: They agreed the Swerve/Ospreay atmosphere was the loudest crowd we'd ever heard. They laughed at the anti-Boston chants. "The women's fits are always immaculate. The men all wear black and look the same, so I appreciate the colorful costumes."

Last night I took my 13yo to see Forbidden Door, the big AEW/New Japan/CMLL/Stardom wrestling show here on Long Island. Their favorite wrestler is Orange Cassidy, so they were sad when he lost, but they loved his match w Zack Sabre Jr anyway. "I'm having a heart attack from all the close calls!"

You know, I'm not 100% sure? I can think of dicks, I can think of handjobs, I can think of cumshots, but I can't think of an onscreen blowjob in a New Golden Age/prestige/peak tv show. But I've got to be missing something.

Now that Interview with the Vampire Season 2 is over (but not the series, fortunately!) I interviewed the great Ben Daniels about playing the evil Santiago for the New York Times. For reasons you'll see, this one means a lot to me.

I liked last night's House of the Dragon a lot, both for being shocking and for clearing up a zany sitcom mix-up. I reviewed it for the New York Times

The doubled/repetitive dialogue that helps give Eyes Wide Shut its Freudian-uncanny feeling doesn't begin until around 12:30, when the models offer to take Bill to where the rainbow ends. That's where the dream begins. Stanley Kubrick: sharp guy!

One thing I don't get into is how wild it is to watch this now that I've seen Fukunaga's Jane Eyre, which is a wee bit more highbrow than "if you've enjoyed these horrific crimes, we also think you'll like Alexandra Daddario nude"-type storytelling. You wonder if he found the material beneath him.

RIP Martin Mull. He was also a pretty amazing artist, never pinning himself down to a single style or technique.

Between 40,000 viewings of Clue, Nick-at-Nite reuns of Fernwood 2 Night, a cameo on The Golden Girls, and a supporting role on Roseanne, Martin Mull was as ubiquitous a comedy figure as anyone in my childhood. No one blustered or flustered with more subtlety.
