The smart thing would have been to run separate candidates in the presidential election (use the runoff!) and unity candidates in the municipal elections.

Yes, I am undecided as to whether they are fighting the last war (and using the strategy that they should have used the last time in a completely different context). Or they simply don't think a unified opposition has a shot and so they are trying to save their own party identities as best they can
