Between 1998 and 2023, Israel declared 28k dunams as "state land" (=land for settlers). In 2024 alone, Israel declared 24k dunams as state land. (1 dunam = 0.25 Acre)

I think the answer to that is "yes," with the proviso that it believes the Syrian regime can successfully stifle the SDF on the long term. I don't think that Ankara is classically expansionist; I think it has inherited the traditional Turkish allergy to any manifestation of Kurdish identity.

The Canadian government announced another round of settler designations. Importantly, this one include Amana, the settler construction arm. This is already a big deal and could get bigger if the US joins on this one.

I mean, domestic politics aside, I can think of a few other issues that have considerable salience: 1. Integrated intelligence structures 2. Obsession with Iran, not only in DC, but among most other regional partners. 3. The strategic costs of selling out an ally, regardless of other factors

I've been teaching about ME history and politics for nearly twenty years; the generational change is absolutely palpable. And it was, in large part, because Israel decided it could afford to stop pretending. This ugly war is, I suspect, the nail in the coffin.

I have long since given up assuming that leaders, faced with they abyss, will walk back because the costs are too high. Perfectly possible that Hezbollah and Israel will waltz themselves right over the edge.
