My teaching assignments have pushed me in this direction, too: the last two years I've co-taught first-year courses for our 2 PhD programs, and I'm scheduled to teach a key class in our EdD. Okay, Sherman, you've explained how scholars in a bunch of fields reason, and reason about evidence. But what about history? I've claimed that historians often act as "argument bricoleurs," and gestured towards formalism with the footnote as the procedural guarantee. That's not enough.
