Never mind assassinations ordered by Seal Team Six. Let’s have Biden order special forces to short-sheet Trump’s bed and then video the result for all to see. Very very bad. Very clearly immune from prosecution. And very funny.
It can be live on the new Twitch channel: Dark Brandon Criming.

Okay, Sherman, you've explained how scholars in a bunch of fields reason, and reason about evidence. But what about history?
I've claimed that historians often act as "argument bricoleurs," and gestured towards formalism with the footnote as the procedural guarantee. That's not enough.

My teaching assignments have pushed me in this direction, too: the last two years I've co-taught first-year courses for our 2 PhD programs, and I'm scheduled to teach a key class in our EdD. It's a good stretch to represent a range of inquiry approaches. On my drive, I've had one question repeating:

While driving 40-60 miles a day between home and hospital, I've distracted myself with some audiobooks, a sprinkling of mostly-non-news podcasts, and thinking about the nature of scholarship. I'm PhD-trained as an historian, MA-and-osmosis trained in quant fields, and in a college of ed.

Minor update, as a prelude to a desultory thread: ambiguous culture resolved. Spouse has three lung infections, two of which require longer-term treatment than the fortunately-non-MRSA staph. We are anticipating discharge home on [redacted date], which is redacted because I am superstitious.

Further thoughts are in the direction of thinking that since 1/20/2005, every president has had roughly half a year before their popularity/approval tanked.

I have some nebulous Thoughts, but if Biden steps aside, "Okay with Harris 2024" ~ "Okay with Biden 2020," which worked better than I expected.
I vaguely remember you were quite enthusiastic about "Okay with Biden 2020."

We had a special issue with historical perspectives on NCLB in HEQ a few years ago. Most (but not all) of the relevant articles in it are open access.
Disclosure: I committed history in that issue. Or co-committed it with Christian Ydesen.

* friendly critics can't be asshole reviewers, by definition.
Also: if you want to put in a modern methods reference, Mario Luis Small and @jessicacalarco.bsky.social's Qualitative Literacy is very clear in the intro that they're talking only about data collection... and it's an entire book!

I guess the question is, as a reader and friendly critic*, how much does their Methods description persuade you to trust their findings, and what would be necessary to help persuade you more?
