In the US, it is the same. As long as you own the flag, you can destroy it however you want. The case people cite about someone being arrested for burning a pride flag was someone burning a flag they didn't own so they got arrested for arson.

They actually only got 16 years in prison compared to the 60 maximum despite being a repeat offender and being charged with a hate crime so the US is pretty light on flag burners.
