if the school pay phone was a COCOT (probably!) then 1) school got hit with the bill lol and 2) if you could get the 800 number to hang up you'd get a dialtone and if you had a dialer from radio shack you could call any line

my pal [ who is now quite famous as a hardware hacker so perhaps I shan't narc on him here even though it was a long time ago ] designed a red box with a mercury switch so when it was upright it was a regular dialer and when it was upside down it'd do red box tones
