Apparently, I used the phrase "out of spoons" when talking to my mother. Apparently, she wasn't aware of the metaphorical use. I just got these in the mail.

I've never heard the phrase before but it so perfectly explains the situation I'm in that it's incredible. I will now use this to help explain to others. So many thanks :-)

I never heard of it either, but now that i know it, I'll probably be using it frequently - it's very useful!

A+ mother action Bonus points if she sent you the tracking info and followed up on the day of delivery

I got a sensible chuckle out of this. Seems exactly like something my mother would do.

She probably knows the metaphorical meaning, but is a bit of a joker. 🤭

This is so sweet! I happened to explain spoon theory to the mom of a kid my kid was in school with. Her kid was going through some serious stuff. She found the spoons idea really illuminating. She gave me a big assortment of spoons for Christmas. I still use them!

I’ve never heard of this metaphor. I would not have bought you spoons, but I’m on your moms side.

As a mother this is exactly what I would do. Daughter mentioned leaving her phone charger at a friend’s. Next day I sent her 3. Mother’s gonna mother!

The first time is always going to be confusing. The first time my sister (in the arts/early adopter) used it with me, I questioned the arbitrary element. If in keeping with cutlery, it should have at least been forks. Does anyone ever run out of spoons? I always am looking for forks.

I love that she apparently labelled the bags “Spoons”. Now you can tell what’s in the bags. So considerate of her! 🥰

That's hilarious and adorable and about the sweetest thing I've seen all day

We were having sugar shortages last year. I did not request help, I knew the situation would remedy itself soon enough and I didn’t *need* cookies that Christmas. My sister in law mailed us sugar anyway. Yyyyyyyyyyyep. Still unopened lol Hey, at least you’re loved :)

Isn't it ironic, It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.

I remember reading a tip by someone that their family ran out of (literal) spoons first so they bought a huge quantity of extra spoons kept in a jar on the counter and it made life easier. Maybe the literal spoons help when one is low on symbolic spoons.

Your mom is awesome! This totally gave me a spoon back today!

I used a similar sentiment when I tried to explain burnout: "All of my spoons are unwashed."

I've never heard it either, had to just look it up. I would have asked what kind of spoons you needed, though, because there's a big difference between a soup spoon and a teaspoon.

I am also constantly out of spoons, but in my case it’s because my 3 toddlers threw all my good wedding silverware away and matching replacement spoons come up very infrequently on eBay

This so great! Big Mom Energy! As a teen one summer, I casually mentioned really liking blueberries. Suddenly mom was buying fresh blueberries all the time! By the end of summer, TBH, I was tired of blueberries, but what could I say???

Apparently, we have the same mother. Or had, in my case. I learned never to say I liked something or wanted to collect something.

What an absolute sweetheart, she didn't fuck about with little numbers either!

On the bright side, now you have the spoons for all sorts of things! Even if it’s not the things you would like them for!

“I’ll be damned if my kid runs out of spoons! They’ll have every spoon!”

This leads me to assume you have at some point used "Im out of spoons" as a reason for not being up to some task, and she just accepted your lack of silverware as valid reason to be unable to perform said task and Im here for that

😂My mom was like that. At one point I had so many kitchen utensils there was a box full under my bed I ended up donating. She had a short addiction to K-tel kitchen gadgets and she started buying two and send me one. I lived in a bachelor pad at the time.🤪I put a stop to that pretty quickly.

I've never heard the expression, but my Mom would take the exact same course of action 😁😁😁

That's darling. In other news, I wanted to share this with my non-bsky daughters, but the post is "sign-in required". Would you be willing to make it publicly-viewable? (That said, I respect your decision not to do so).

Very sweet of her. I must confess, I have to Google the expression. I'd have just told me mam I was fucking knackered. She swears more than me.

I think society as a whole could use more spoons. A LOT more spoons. Even those not chronically ill are apparently at the fork... With bent tines from being so pokey.

Perhaps you can explain a non native english speaker what "out of spoons" mean? Your mother is great!
