We’re Inland Northern American English twins!
My peers gave me a rough time for it when I got to college, telling me it made me sound uneducated, it took me a long time to realize pronouncing things as you were taught them is just how language learning works haha
I failed kindergarten rhyming because of it. I did a one-day phonemics thing at work and told the facilitator that I knew they wanted me to say that "frog" and "jog" rhymed because we were in Kansas, but I was from Chicago where they absolutely did not.
It was a few years there that I would have totally said Pilates so terribly wrong. I truly had never heard the word spoken and thought it was pronounced like 'pie lates'. I remember when I 1st heard it and relieved I hadn't embarrassed myself by saying it the way I thought. 😹
