I have a vba/excel script that four other people use regularly and someone finally asked me about the comment after a line that takes the modulo of a quadratic equation, that says "no idea why this works but don't change it" and I'm all "I think that comment speaks for itself..."

I suspect, from observation, that people who would drive at a given speed, when stuck in traffic for a while, will drive much faster when they get a chance, out of frustration. As a cyclist, watching people blow through neighborhoods at 70mph because of a slowdown on the main roads is scary.

In my experience, you should replace this whole valve system about once every ten years. The seal between tank and base is more of a hassle and does need a wrench, and can be quite messy if it goes awry, but the float riser isn't bad to diy. Getting the handle chain length right is fussy sometimes.

That is a pretty simple fix. You can go buy a replacement, one brand is floatmaster, and replace just the riser and float. For this specific job you don't even need tools. All the parts are hand tightened against rubber seals.
