🌱This is another bloom from dahlia Soulman. Lost a couple due to scorching, but have placed beach umbrella overhead. It’s beach blanket Babylon around here.

🌱Here is a personal favorite of mine. So much so, I think we have it planted in 3 places to ensure we have at least one to carry through the winter. Dahlia David Howard. It’s the dark foliage. The understated color of the bloom. Classic.

I could, but I’m just a bit lazy. More than a bit, truth be told. I think we’ve saved every plant tag ever in several large boxes.

Yeah? So sorry. 😖 It’s been a scramble here watering, moving pots, putting up umbrellas. We have a fair bit of native plants and our garden has grown in a bit more than in previous summers. It’s coming through better than I expected.

When do you know? If you have a problem? A 350+ bulb order arriving in the fall. 100+ dahlia tubers purchased plus 2 flats of dahlia seedlings. But hey… it could be worse.

🌱You know when you plant something… and you try and keep the tag so you know what it is… but then the tag has gone missing? Yeah. It’s like that. NoID dahlia.

🌱One of main reasons we grow a portion of our dahlias from seed is to get these single open dahlia forms. For the bees and pollinators. It works!

🌱Hollyhill Dragonfire. This dahlia survived a winter in the ground and has grown to over 6’. And now it’s getting ready to bloom.

We have some seedlings from last year that overwintered in the ground just fine. And yet another batch of seedlings this year as well. We haven’t really thought about doing any sort of breeding or hybridization process.

We’re waiting another week or two to harvest ours. I think we must have got 5 different types, but I have no memory storage capacity anymore. Next year, we’ve trimmed it down to three.

We’ve been up early (to alarms on the weekend!) and watering before coffee. Watering. BEFORE. Coffee. Today’s forecast is 100°F/38°C and tomorrow may be 102°F/39°C. We should drop below 90°F/30°C by Thursday. Very little gardening. Watering. Moving plants. Erecting shade. Holding on.

We have numerous dahlias in raised beds; the cutting gardens have mums, cosmos, zinnias, and some volunteer poppies and hollyhocks. Another bed with the aforementioned along with some peonies, summer annuals, and a climbing rose. Many are in pots or grow bags (an experiment this season).

Our climate has been slowly shifting to warmer, drier summers. The winters are pretty mild here in the Willamette Valley. My biggest complaint is the number of consecutive grey days. It’s gets tough not seeing the sun for weeks. I’m told you get used to it… 🤣🤣🤣
