If you want to win, if you want to achieve good things then it is essential to understand the context in which you're fighting and the goals and disposition of your energy. Hoping a bunch of hard nosed right wingers will do nice things because they have red rosettes is self defeating.

Sets realistic expectations based on the available evidence, which I personally find more useful, if admittedly less pleasant, than making up a government in my head and pretending they're the ones who just won the election.
