Pour one out for Richard Sherman, responsible for 90% of every song in the Disney canon. A stage on the Disney lot is named for the Sherman Brothers, and they have a window on Disneyland's Main Street, Imagineering's highest honor.

This was also the case in 2016 and 2020. The trust fund cosplay socialists and all the podcasters who jumped ship from Bernie pushed the great economic anxiety alliance. The far right has done nothing to meet them (unless you count rebranding from the likes of Jackson Hinkle) but the push remains.

Oh, and (I meant to write this part earlier), if I had to rank Jake episodes in quality, I'd probably tie this with 32 and rank 47 last. I think 47 gave him the most chances but the overall writing was more of a mess. Maybe his fourth, if there is one, will finally fully click. #SNL

I know some bits, especially the Scooby Doo pre-tape, are probably much more popular with others than me. I know that I may be too fatigued for modern SNL. I just want more of an identity, more of a drive, and a few more chances to be taken. Please, 50, find that voice. I know it's in there. #SNL

The episode summed up many of the stronger and weaker elements of season 49 and meant I remain unsure going into season 50, but I will take that over a finale that just leaves me with dread or anger (32, 48, 43). The pieces are in place, if the show tries. #SNL

Final: By most finale standards, this was decent, even if nothing knocked me out. The derivative elements in the first half wore me down, not helped by the played-out Update, but there were at least three sketches I genuinely enjoyed (man parade and the last two) and nothing I hated. #SNL

Cowboy: Another surprise - JAJ closing out 49! Sign for next year? Maybe not (Melissa led the final sketch of 44) but it does fit his quietly strong 49 run. Whiffy ending aside, I liked this. Fun central performance from JAJ, one of Bowen's better sketch roles of late, and a solid way to exit. #SNL

This reminded me of something John Mulaney/Simon Rich/Marika Sawyer might have done in the late '00s or early '10s, just not quite as sharp. This was overall a nice surprise to see in the end of the episode, where I was half-expecting camp-and-vamp horrors. #SNL

Character Actor: Something else that felt like it made more sense in the first half of the show. Padding (didn't need the Hamm cameo) and a few flubs aside, I liked this. A detail-oriented piece, well-performed by Jake, topical without feeling like it's begging for attention. #SNL

Call: Another Seiday threepeat (Culkin, Chalamet #2). Odd structure in that the unfunny bits were extended while the potentially funny moments (like Michael as a perv) were truncated. A waste of Jake, and so many laugh lines that the audience did not care about (like the DMX bit). #SNL

I just don't see how we can wring out a whole season of these guys. I hope the show makes some real changes for the last Jost and Che year (if next season is their last), surprises for them and us, because what we got here was fully diminished returns. #SNL

The rabbi, real or fake, was very likeable - her not even trying to pretend to be angry and just smiling and enjoying herself was much more interesting than the jokes. The best actual joke, by far, was the Kendrick stuff Jost wrote for Che, even if it ran a little long. #SNL

Update #2: One of the weaker joke swaps, in large part because there's not much left to say for Scarjo jokes, and in today's tense climate (see the Driver cold open) they were never going to go there in harsh anti-Semitic jokes so you got lukewarm "space laser" material from Twitter. #SNL

I do think they have made a mistake pushing Marcello so much, one they may regret if he doesn't get much response next season. We'll see if they learn to moderate or if they keep on trying and trying. He is fine in smaller doses. #SNL

Update #1: Bowen, Michael and Sarah bound-and-gagged somewhere in the back while Kenan and Marcello wear the costumes. Overlong, but helped by the energy levels from both men, especially Kenan. Not a great finale desk piece for me but compared to many desk pieces in 49 it could have been worse. #SNL

Not Chonk/Not Woke Jeans: Another piece tonight that is competent but suffers from how derivative the tone may feel if you have been watching for enough years. I liked that they expanded the aspect of calling out the models on still wearing the cheap clothes. Decent but forgettable. #SNL

Bike: This was the classic "someone wanted to put this on all season - it's the finale now, screw it," sketch. I respected the attempt at getting something on that felt so difficult to stage live. Jake was certainly giving his all. And Bowen was Bowen. A failure, but an interesting one. #SNL

Could have done without the "crowd reacts" part w/Kenan and Heidi (although Heidi looked great with the '40s style) but I still enjoyed this - it felt different for the current show and had a certain flair, along with a surprisingly decent Bubsy Berkely pastiche. Maybe my favorite of the night. #SNL

Men: At first, I thought this was going to be another turn-based sketch like the nephew pageant from season 44. Instead, we just had the guys as one, and a lively showman performance from Jake. This reminded me of The State (maybe due to the many men), albeit without that show's mania. #SNL

It feels silly to be critical of SNL for taking an easy or popular approach in pre-tapes - this is corporate sketch comedy, not avant garde theater - but similar to the Seiday piece on Mario from last season, there's something in the sheer desperation of these moments that can wear me down. #SNL

Scooby: Seiday repeat their Christmas Carol pre-tape from last season. Gorefests get a good response, and I liked the energetic performances, especially JAJ as the villain. The face-peeling was a great shock. After that it started to slide into repetition and a somewhat cynical tone. #SNL

This felt thin to me outside of the initially stated premise. I enjoyed Jake's performance, and Andrew's, but there was a perfunctory feel, even with potentially strong twists where Andrew had to fake an allergic reaction and got stabbed in the neck as a result. Still, it was fine. #SNL

Cookie: Another Dismukes lead-off? Not complaining. And once again he shows how far he has progressed from just being the guy who is loud by being a perfect straight man to Jake (who feels a bit like a cross between a Kenan and Sudeikis character). #SNL

Monologue: Did Jake tuck his shiny shirt in right before he got onstage? I liked the shift in the musical monologue away from showtunes. Not a fan of "we suck, lol, not really," wink SNL can never get enough of, but Jake was fine. And we got confirmation about Pedro Pascal being asked to host. #SNL

Negatives: Month old jokes beaten into the ground (Noem). Week old jokes beaten into the ground (Lecter). A reminder of how much the writing is stuck in 2016 (Trump claiming he doesn't actually want to win). The fatigue and dread that is endemic to any Trump material on this show, or anywhere. #SNL

CO: Inevitable Trump return. Positives: JAJ tried, as always. 5 minutes instead of the 10 we'd have had a few years ago. A few lines to get the audience gasping ("juror #9, but to me she's a 6"). We got a month off. And Longfellow had a fun cameo, even if the silence summed up his season. #SNL

I should close by thanking them for no Kamaya. The dregs of WU (Stormy pron jokes, garbled Biden dementia joke, a bizarre attempt to tell us how much better in a debate RFK Jr would be than Biden and Trump) tell you where the show's mind is, but I have no need to return to "resisting" either. #SNL

When I look at most of this output, and especially the increasingly dire and backwashed Update, I genuinely do not know how they will get through next season without serious writing and cast changes. They are so frightened of or checked out of doing anything with most of their cast. #SNL

I will credit the show for giving both Maya and Kristen, the two broadest cast members of their respective eras, episodes that defied expectations - I just wish that this episode had had any of the effort that went into Kristen's. #SNL

This was probably Maya's overall best hosting stint just because she was in the middle of everything and was not relying on any of her old crutches - even the fart sketch saw a much more controlled Maya, enough to be one of the stronger pieces of the night, along with the mom pre-tape. #SNL

Unfortunately, the basic writing and performance level now are so mediocre-to-poor that I just don't think they were able to execute these concepts. Nights like these almost end up disappointing me more than outright bad episodes because you could see the pieces, but no one put them together. #SNL

There were a number of moments through the night which pointed to a direction I want to see - less of the wretched camp-n-vamp, more ensemble feel, and pointing to the world Maya might have been in as a cast member if her hammier instincts hadn't often overwhelmed her. #SNL

Final: You'd expect a Maya return episode to be big on pizazz, whether you want it or not. A few segments early on tried, but this was a surprisingly subdued night. I'm not entirely sure how much was intentional and how much was down to how gassed out the show feels these days. #SNL

CFT #1: Another carbon copy sketch means that Michael and Chloe reprise the roles Amy Poehler and Jason Bateman played. At least it puts Michael's wry line readings to rare good use this season. I wonder if this is what got Emily Spivey a writing credit. #SNL www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXCY...

Lawn: Another sketch where I'm torn between admiring the ensemble feel and being puzzled over how tonally messy the whole thing is. A decent way to end, helped a great deal by finally letting JAJ off the leash. He reminded me a lot of the sketch where Dana Carvey plays Robin Williams' son. #SNL

Ego and Maya were fine, as was Mikey in what is the closest we'll ever get to one of my favorite characters of his (Mort Fellner), but much as I can't say no to cast having more to do, all the segments with white nurses just slowly became padded and confused the tone of the rest of the sketch. #SNL
