Which in turn goes back to Irvin Kershner giving them a lot of time to rehearse and workshop scenes, something that wasn't in Lucas's directorial toolbox. Lucas does a lot of things really, really well as a director--working with actors and giving them what they need isn't among them.

Totally. In fairness his (at the time) totally bizarre choice of Kershner shows some small flicker of self-awareness. He picked a guy who understand actors instead of a big epic director. He got the right man for the job and I can report nobody thought so in 1979.
