They’re worth reading. I actually reread You Only Live Twice every couple of years. It taught me — at a very young age — that you can write about profound things in your popcorn series, if you have the guts.

It is also an objectively funny name for a punctuation mark and implies a modicum of education. But yeah. It’s mostly about picking the one that goes bang.

Raised (questionably) on Bond movies, I’ve always preferred it more as an afterglow thing. “That? Oh, that’s just where a psycho killer got me with a carving knife back in the 90s…”

This episode was a lot of fun - it was great getting to chat with @davallone.bsky.social again, and as a fan of old school pulp adventure heroes I got a kick out of these 70s Doc Savage comics!

I am not a particular fan of Altman… but early Spielberg feels heavily influenced by him and it’s a positive thing. You see it in all the movies and then 1941 is his most Altman-esque… and when it fails he drops those habits and never looks back.

#2 is big. When I was single I worked whenever, day or night. It took me a while, after getting married, to realize adapting a bit to my wife’s working schedule — so that I could be “off” when she was — was in both of our best interests. Sometimes deadlines interfere, but mostly I stick to that.

Of course: how the space is utilized is part of the formula of how much time it equals. And also — you have no guarantee that the reader will follow your lead and take the time to look at every detail and read every word. But you do your best to guide them.

I was talking with Chaykin about this once (forgive the comics name drop) and at some point the clouds parted in my mind and I said “so in comics… space EQUALS time.” I think everyone making comics has at least a vague sense of this, but it’s helped me to be conscious of it.

It really is making *me* feel crazy to see a bunch of other Democrat voters running around screaming about how Biden is now unelectable, on the basis of one bad debate and an incredibly obvious ratfucking campaign by America’s most craven newspaper.

It also makes me feel insane that the rat fuck around Biden’s age and mental capacity is being uncritically spread around by Democrats when Trump is *incredibly obviously* grotesquely mentally incapacitated, in a way that is genuinely terrifying.

I understand the need to paint the Nazis as unstoppable supermen… but so much of the mythology of things like U-Boats and the Luftwaffe falls apart when you read up on reality. They were very impressive if you still had horse cavalry and biplanes, though. 2/2

For various projects, I’ve had to do a ton of research on the interwar period and Nazi Germany and… much like today, much like Robert E Lee, they are only remarkably efficient compared to their fumbling rivals of the day. 1/2

I see it a lot. Guy who never gets engagement of any kind finally shits on the wrong person, gets slapped silly, and takes to his own feed to fume and rage. But the only folks who see it are the morbidly curious who are still laughing at him.

On his page, he is shitting out dozens of “I’m not owned I WANTED THIS” and “I’m not here to make friends!” skeets, to deafening silence. They all turn into failed reality show contestants at the slightest challenge.

You’re a “lowbie” because you’re boring and annoying in literally the least original way possible. You are legion, and everyone laughing at you today will forget you exist about five minutes after they’re done laughing. You have the “impact” of a man repeatedly smacking his own face.

Who do you imagine you’re talking to here? I’m always fascinated by this. The account talking to itself in a mirror, for reassurance, with only those who’re laughing at it seeing it happen. No reassurance. Mockery and tumbleweeds.

Connery was a smarter actor than he’s generally given credit for… but yes, even the best will often need a director. Of course my Sean Connery Phantom Menace is directed by John Boorman, so… problem solved.

I mean, he’d never have done it but it’s fun to think about. Maybe if they’d let him play Qui Gon? I like Liam Neeson but I think he didn’t grasp that Qui Gon is a tragic figure and not a hero at all. If Connery had taken it I think he’d have improved that movie about 25%.

HOOK has Charlie Korsmo, who acts rings around Hoffman and Williams. Warren Beatty also got an amazing performance out of him in the wildly underrated DICK TRACY.

I don’t, and I haven’t seen Brackett’s script. I have heard over the years that the structure comes from her draft.

I think plenty of directors could fulfill the Kershner role: deal with the actors and bring the “heart” while Lucas and his team handle the exploding starships and pod-racers parts.

Yeah, I was probably combining stuff from a couple of sources. Given the amount of time it takes to make things… my guess is the comics line is from the earliest draft, and “I love you, too” was what got as far as the set before Ford rejected it.

It’s been reported over the years from a lot of sources. Even just recently I saw an interview with Fisher from 1980 where she was hinting at it. She says something like “in the first one, George wouldn’t let me change any of the dialogue but I wore him down in tthis one.”

There’s a tension between what they are thematically ("how do you get to fascism?”) and what they are as products (summer blockbuster popcorn movies,) which might have been an impossible needle to thread. Maybe David Lean or Kubrick could do that, but Lucas — without great writers — couldn’t.

Totally. In fairness his (at the time) totally bizarre choice of Kershner shows some small flicker of self-awareness. He picked a guy who understand actors instead of a big epic director. He got the right man for the job and I can report nobody thought so in 1979.
