Putin is horrid, no question there, but at this point the main criticism re Le Pen, Meloni, Vox etc in the english-speaking west has been "They support Putin/Russia", and so they'll view the anti-immigration rhetoric as, like you said, annoying. Meloni's public support re Ukraine's a great example.

Absolutely, a closeness with Putin could be concerning but it's so far down the list of things we should be worried about
