If you can read French, or know someone that can, the New Popular Front/Nouveau Front Populaire (NPF/NFP)'s pretty comprehensive platform and promises (not bad, given the small time frame) can be found here: www.nouveaufrontpopulaire.fr

Should the Nouveau Front Populaire actually win out against the RN, or at least curtail them heavily, there will nonetheless be arguments and backbiting by centrists (who would make Street and Akehurst look like cuddly lefties). But they, right now, the only ones providing substantial alternatives.

It's that centrist right wing Cold War idiocy (which, in hindsight, never stopped being SOP) where fash were okay as they were "Our sons of bitches" (Hello, 50s-80s Spain and Portugal!) and subsumes everything else, and gives us vicious blow-black, which we're seeing over on the continent.

Putin is horrid, no question there, but at this point the main criticism re Le Pen, Meloni, Vox etc in the english-speaking west has been "They support Putin/Russia", and so they'll view the anti-immigration rhetoric as, like you said, annoying. Meloni's public support re Ukraine's a great example.

Right. There is a lot of political, social and historical context that gets downplayed or even ignored, until it's too late. We're seeing this with Meloni a lot, with her fascism only being a talking point as she's more overt about it (more than RN/Le Pen/Bardella).

I know I’ve been going about France a lot lately, but that’s in part because what often happens there ends up in Spain and elsewhere in Europe - including the UK, especially when it comes to realising just how awful the Right Wing masking as Centrism project is in reality.

I’ve quote-posted this on my profile too, but it’s a good summation (in English) of not just *how* much Macron fucked it, but that he always had that plan. Also, Darmanin continues to be pure bigoted trash: bsky.app/profile/tani...

Legitimately very impressive, with some good stuff offered on their platform Going by some polls they could put a dent in RN’s numbers, and if they can actually beat them, that would be great. The “extremes at both ends are just as bad” narrative has weakened a bit as well.

Jon Henley, for example, is clearly trying to boost Attal (the PM), and is *grudgingly* giving some props to the unified left (who've done so much in a very short period of time, even though Macron deliberately tried to fuck them)

It's actually funny how people that are on Macron's side in the English-speaking press have quieted down a bit, once it's come out just how badly he's fucked it. (Taniel on here's been great at highlighting that for the non-French speaking crowd).

Horrible that someone did that, but yesss that they got some sort of very quick comeuppance (I'm hoping).

Even from a pragmatic perspective, the changing-horses-midstream strategy doesn't make sense. Whether or not Harris is capable (and can find *her* potential VP in time), it conveys a lack of confidence, and would just be pounced upon by outlets and the Republicans.

Darmanin, by the way, is the guy who said, when told that studies disproved his belief that there was a specific increase in crime, that he trusts his butcher on this. He is also the guy who told Le Pen that she was too soft on Muslims.

If I’m going on about this, it’s because Taniel is highlighting really well not just how badly Macron - who was/is being held up as a golden boy for the centre - and his team has played this, but also how much disdain he and his team. Attal, on the other hand, is coming across better.

Another thing about Corbyn: there was quite a bit of preemptive gloating (even by centrists/Starmer fans on here) when there was a report that some in his constituency had voted for Labour by post bc they thought he was still in Labour. When he won, that gloating also stopped.

(Another note on the prior tweet: The Inrerior Minister is also responsible for organizing elections, so…) —Attal and Macron have had “glacial” relations since Macron’s decision to call elections. We’ve known Attal didn’t know about it till just before public announcement.

—Macron Interior Ministry, Darmanin right of party, reportedly said organizing election on 7/7 is good bc “bledards [word for immigrants from North Africa] won’t be around & won’t vote Left.” Note: Darmanin & RN nearly tied in round 1. Left dropped out, helping him, to block RN

—Attal began calling Macronist candidate who came in 3rd but made runoff, asking them to drop out to consolidate vs far-right.

—Attal surprised to realize Macron was calling some in parallel, asking them to NOT drop out. This would risk RN wins.

Details reported in piece for those who can’t read it —Macron’s team mostly shrugged off results on Sunday. They started celebrating a birthday as returned still coming in —He didn’t bother watching as Prime Minister, Attal, gave forceful speech calling to block far-right. (1/?)

I went through the whole thing, and it's just badly written. Disjointed, waffling, just ranting and getting stuff off his chest in a tedious manner. The Polite Far Right's answer to Tobi Haslett, he is not.

In "The Cassini Division", the second book in Ken Macleod's Fall Revolution series, the socialist Solar Union uses what are essentially *huge* futuristic versions of Babbage Machines, that are cooled down in planetoids of ice, and that still sounds like a better use than what "AI" does now.

It's frustrating, because yes it really does, whether in terms of aesthetics, sound and costume design, etc - like an actual bande-dessinée. It's also, in many way, a very European 90s movie because of that.

It was quite telling that when he pushed through immigration legislation that was pretty controversial within his own party (and led to a resignation or two), Le Pen was the most enthusiastic supporter of said legislation.

One interesting consequence of the Americans not landing on the moon first in “For All Mankind” is that the US government stops giving cover to Wernher von Braun, so he’s raked over the coals in court and in the media about his Nazi past, and is persona non grata afterwards.

Which I could be surprised, but as Taniel says, this was apparent. Complete disaster of a person, willing to sabotage any actual meaningful confrontation against the far right. When I say centrists are fatally dogmatic, this is an example of what I mean.

Another big fight will be trans rights. Labour have already shown us how bad they are on this, and the risk to our trans comrades is not diminished by a change in government. Take your lead from your trans friends on how to support the fight for their rights rather than from me - but step up now
