The polls in the two days following the debate indicated that by a 2:1 margin voters said Trump won. 25% of Democrats wanted another nominee. But the number of those who were for Biden before, still said they'd vote for him. The media onslaught (not just NYT opeds) has done more damage.

No, but they are not a small minority either. 47% of the voters picked Trump in 2016. In 2020, when nearly 25 million more voted, his share of those? 47%. He got 47% both times. So we live among a significant number of MAGAts. Either vociferously supporting him, or quietly doing so.

He has a lifetime appointment. They did not come after him when his court rejected all those election lawsuits. So I am not sure he is a coward as much as he is complicit. I doubt if he worries about his legacy anymore especially when the legacy writers, as you point out, are his people.

If Trump wins, all this backfiring talk is moot. He will implement their agenda. In 2016 the Koch bros. swore off him, and he attacked their lack of support. The next year, Koch lobbyists had desks in the WH writing legislation for him to get passed.

I think Trump assigned her to Biden stories. NYT featured more stories about Hillary in 2016 that mentioned 'sexual assault' than they did on Trump. She had a byline in a lot of them.

The Constitution is what a current majority of the SCOTUS says it is. Combine that with the unreviewable and absolute power of thecoardon, no Trump underling would refuse a Trump order. As a easy out, Trump will replace them with someone willing.

Trump got 47% of the vote in 2016 and 2020. So I stand corrected. *Almost* half of my fellow citizens support fascism. Nationwide polls are probably a good secondary source, and in those two Trump gets about half of us on his side.

I always felt that a president had such powers, thanks to the power of the pardon. This ruling is merely confirming that for Trump specifically. The thought of this particular president returning to power would be the turn of the corner for me. It'd mean that half of fellow citizens endorse fascism.
