A final determination that this person deserves death. It’s easier in fiction. There is a biological imperative that needs to be overcome in real life. Psychopaths don’t have that hurdle. So the quip let’s us still identify some humanity and morals in the protagonist.

But it annoys the fuck out of me. So I don’t write my stories that way. Maybe I’m thinking about this because I’m at a scene where my protagonist needs to decide that fate for someone else. Maybe it’s the current politics dredging up these emotions.
