The exception is Reagan finishing his second term despite dementia. Bush won anyway. And it's not always age: Clinton staying on after the Lewinsky scandal broke probably doomed Gore.

If you look back through history, as I once did, you find it's actually a bad idea to run as the VP of a two-term president. Bush Sr. managed it after Reagan, but he's the anomaly; usually, they lose big.
