Counterargument: A different candidate could respond forcefully and articulately to the attacks, the way Barack Obama and Bill Clinton could and Joe Biden can't.

GOP politicians used to know better, but then along came Palin, Trump, MTG, etc. The think tankers must still know better, I guess.

it is 100% assumed on the right that all American cities were burned to the ground during the 2020 protests by Black Lives Matter and it is irrelevant that the cities remained standing and had not been burned down

Is the president of the Heritage Foundation so poorly informed that he thinks violent leftists were able to "take over" entire cities in 2020? Or does he just assume that the rubes who follow him believe this?

I honestly believe what I wrote. I don't think this is a battle these folks think is worth fighting. I think they assume it could backfire.

I think he wants to distance himself from some of what Project 2025 wants until Election Day, but he's not necessarily rejecting the agenda. (He might be - he hates it when people think someone else is making decisions for him - but we shouldn't assume that he's rejecting the agenda outright.)

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

The worst-case scenario is that Biden is uninspiring but adequate in the Stephanopoulos interview, so he stays in the race, and it turns out that the damage from the debate *and from days and days of "Will Biden quit?" stories* have put him in too deep a hole to recover.

If you're a Democratic insider and you really think Biden should go, make the case behind closed doors. Stop trying to do it via the media - that's not working. Circular firing squads make voters dislike the party more. Democrats never seem to understand this.

John Roberts et al are institutionalists in that they thought the institutions of 1904 America were just fine and didn't need any updating with effective national government or the ability to regulate industry or consumer products or medicine or having social programs or civil & voting rights.

Skeptics will disagree, but I believe John Roberts is an institutionalist. It's just that the only institutions he cares about preserving are the Republican Party and the plutocracy.

We all know the answer. If Biden, as president, ordered a drone strike on loan collectors, SCOTUS would say he had no right. If Trump, as president, ordered a drone strike on people with delinquent student loans, SCOTUS would say it was fine.

A one-sentence constitutional amendment: "The president of the United States is not a monarch, and is subject to the rule of law like any citizen." It couldn't pass soon, but it's reasonable, and advocating for it would make opponents - i.e., all Republicans - seem unreasonable.

You should expect breaking news that takes massive rights away from American citizens from the Supreme Court on a regular basis right now, & be living informed by that. You should not be sitting paralyzed when they do the latest fascist thing. They've proven predictable, so learn their patterns.

The 14th Amendment says if you were involved in an insurrection you can't be president. SCOTUS said they won't allow anyone to enforce that because of reasons they made up. The Constitution doesn't say the president is immune from criminal law. SCOTUS decided he is because of reasons they made up.

I don't actually believe that a reelected Trump would use his new powers to assassinate potential Democratic rivals. I do think he'll use it to have anti-Trump activists shot and killed. And now there's not a damn thing anyone can do about that.

Our political ancestors responded to Dred Scott by hiring an antislavery lawyer to the presidency and simply refusing to comply with the Fugitive Slave Act, including using mob violence to reject slave hunters. I feel like we can do better.

1. They might have seen him as a liability when he didn't seem electable. He seems electable now. 2. Alito and Thomas want to retire and be replaced by 45-year-old clones of themselves. Trump will get that done. 3. It's not chaos for them.
