Hubby, daddy, lawyer, photographer. This account will primarily be filled with wildlife and nature photography, mostly by yours truly, with maybe a bit of snark here and there. If this is your vibe, welcome aboard!
Going to be spending a few days cruising down river on the boat next week.... picked up Kevin's new novella to help while away some of those lazy hours. Can't wait to jump into it!

It was actually harder than I thought it would be to find 9 images in a row that look okay. I do not compose my photos for a square aspect ratio, so many of them do not display well on the Instagram square grid, having the subject cut off and whatnot.

#Photography folks, show any 9 frames from your Instagram grid and drop your handle.
Iām @steve_waycott on IG and I post photos of local wildlife of all shapes, sizes, and types.
I'm cheating and posting 2 selections because I can't decide between them & I don't have the time to fret over it. :)

Thanks. No, I wasn't on the ground but I was holding the camera right at water level and using the flipscreen on the back to compose the shot.

I don't know about mange. At the time this photo was taken (mid May) they are shedding their winter coat though, and it often looks pretty scraggly. And sometimes they scratch and scrape at trees to rid themselves of ticks, which can rub off patches of fur.

@texasphotographer.bsky.social As with most other settings on your camera, the choice to shoot in DX mode versus FX (in Nikon-speak) is one that makes sense in some circumstances and not in others.

Also higher magnification for video.
Subject detection AF sometimes works better in DX mode for distant subjects, at least for Nikon mirrorless cameras, as the subject is larger in the viewfinder.
Also, file size is considerably smaller (allows faster burst rate & takes less storage space).

The normal advantage is that it increases the effective focal length of a lens by 50% (but at lower resolution). However, this deer was fairly close to me already and the extra focal length was too much, resulting in a disadvantage rather than an advantage.

Unfortunately, I was in my car looking at the deer at the side of the road. Moving further away was not possible.

What happens when you have an 800mm lens mounted on your camera & you forget that your camera is in DX (crop sensor) mode? This. This happens. š

They are certainly entertaining to watch. The open space was less a creative choice and more a necessity because I'd already cropped in as far as I possibly could. :)

I find www.inaturalist.org to be very helpful when trying to ID and unknown (to me) critter. I often have a difficult time navigating bugguide.net, but you can upload your photo to inaturalist and it will do its best to give you some ID suggestions, one of which is usually correct.
