Horrified thinking about how this information points to an epidemic of similar brain damage among Ukrainian and Russian veterans spread out over decades.

Possible, but low probability. The weight of a mortar shell is ~250 times that of a typical light rifle bullet, and artillery shells are much larger again. I doubt the force would be simply cumulative, any more than the kinetic impact of walking would equate to jumping off a 3+ story building.

Well we know repeated impact, not concussions, causes CTE in football player, and some of those guns have intense kickbacks.
