A few years back, when I was broke and suicidal, I decided to get a job on a whale boat to hasten my demise.

My wife's (white) family emigrated from South Africa when she was about 5, in1975 or so. Apparently the government didn't like what her father was saying against apartheid and it was safer to go elsewhere.

Am 60, and can confirm the same for myself. Continually working to improve, and not slipping towards conservatism in the least.

Sometimes it feels like anyone who's enough of a sucker to actually stop at a 4-way stop loses their right of way.

This is much better than what I usually see on push-button door openers, which is for some reason "Activate Switch to Operate."

And his "explanation" that it's good because tigers do it is -- not convincing. I mean, don't tigers sometimes kill their young? The whole perspective of this family is fucked up.

I know this isn't your main point with this post, but I never saw any shame in running from my bullies in school. And I could always run faster than them, too.

There's a kid's grave in my local cemetery that says, "Take a nap, Morrie." Gets me every time.

There's a dedicated bus lane in East Oakland that people use as a speedway. Several people have been killed and one building collapsed because an out-of-control car hit a support pillar in the front.

Peter's been telling me about this book for ages -- he seems really excited about it and told me he's worried because he "can't find anything wrong with it." Of course he wrote it. Is this the dude who tried to steal his publishing rights making the claim?

I once plotted out a novel tentatively titled "Nor Gods Nor Men His Neighbors." Didn't go anywhere, but I still think it's a great title.

I would argue that criminalizing homelessness or allowing a hellscape of people sleeping outdoors are not the only two options available, in spite of what Grants Pass is arguing.

Thank you! I've always felt dehumanized being referred to as a "resource." Even if they do put that word "human" in there.

A few years back, my high school bully died in a terrible car crash. I, also, was made thoughtful. I did not grieve him, but it brought up confusing feelings and reflection. So, within the limits of not knowing the specifics of your brother or your thoughtfulness, let me say I understand.

Not to be that guy, but: is "phenomena" really accepted as a singular now? I'm seeing it in publications that I otherwise respect.

One of Harry Harrison's comic sci fi series has slimy aliens who think humans are gross. Someone points out to them, though, that we *do* have a wet slimy thing in our mouths, so we're not too bad.

When we were looking at EVs a couple of years ago, all I wanted was an electric Accord or Camry -- bigger than a Volt or Leaf but not humungo. Except for the Polestar they just didn't exist. (And the Polestar literally went up $4,000 in the week after we test drove it, so that was a no-go.)

My time at Marlboro College (about 185 students when I was there -- very small fishbowl) taught me a good lesson that carries over to email / social media: If you don't want *everybody* to know something, don't tell *anybody.*

I've finally gotten to the place where if I have more than 3 rubber bands in my kitchen rubber band & stuff drawer I will cut the ones on my egg carton and throw them in the trash. Same with twist-ties, but I don't need to cut them, of course.

I finally got around to reading this article about the merging of Spanish & English in Miami. When I studied Latin we would speak English in Latin word order so we could get the feel of the language, and it was great fun.

Especially if there are two lanes going your direction. The people in the other lane aren't going to stop for bikes / pedestrians just because you do. In fact they'll speed up to get around you wondering why you've stopped.

When you write of Sarpedon in your introduction to The Iliad, and how his public spiritedness cannot overwhelm his need for personal honor, it made me think of basketball stars like LeBron James and how they dominate the court, rarely sharing the glory with their teammates.
