I suppose that was always an option. But if he refused to turn over subpoenaed evidence he could not be tried for that as a crime? Still he can be impeached even for that. Would he just not leave the office even if convicted? That’s when “who does the military obey” enters the drama.

The threat of criminal prosecution after leaving office kept Nixon from pulling such stunts. Pretty much every Founder said that the president wasn’t a king and so was subject to the law like everyone else *precisely* for this reason. Pipsqueak minds like Roberts think they know better.
