My city - in particular the mayor - has become a nightmare about this. Downtown there is a pedestrian mall. Everyone downtown loves it, and in a recent survey over 90% of respondents said they do not want any automotive traffic on it. The mayor said "I don't think that makes any sense."

My neighborhood is mostly very walkable, but because of all the pedestrian traffic - and, sadly, some serious accidents - the neighborhood has been advocating lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h. There have been studies supporting the move. This has been blocked by council and the mayor.
