I don't think it's wise for us to take that headline at face value

The "lack of immediate visibility" is objectively false. Biden has done numerous public appearances since the debate.

Feels like the VP debate would either go well - spawning 'why did they switch?' stories - or go badly - spawning 'Harris was dumb to stick with Biden' stories. Lose-lose

I deleted the first two posts of this thread to stop rewarding bad publications with traffic. For context, here are the screenshots.

Yeah, this is a great thread, but I disagree with the choice to include the link. NYT publishes this stuff counting on hate clicks. It's part of their business model. We should avoid helping them profit off of this garbage.

Biden has made numerous public appearances since the debate. Is Serwer unaware or is he hiding this fact?

Thank you for the correction. I still think you're nuts if you think a single Republican would vote to allow a Democratic VP. They wouldn't. They never, ever would.

Sure, if Harris is the successor. But people seem to want someone else, and I can't imagine any sitting VP letting someone else take over without a fight.

Agreed. The defections wouldn't matter except the media is determined to ensure that they matter.

Okay! You want Republicans to wield the power of consequence-free corruption. Thank you for being forthright.

The road map absolutely is important, and I'm not claiming I have all the answers. The one thing I do know is what Republicans will do the next time they hold the presidency. And that is that they will use corruption to hold power indefinitely. I'd rather not just wait for that day.

So far, my idea is admittedly lacking in concrete steps. But the big picture is "use this newly granted power to destroy this newly granted power".

It's not stepping outside the rule of law, though. The rules have changed. I didn't want them to change, but I don't think we should pretend they haven't.

But you're obligated to hand the gun to someone who has promised to murder you? Look, we can agree that the problem is SCOTUS handing unlimited power to the presidency, right? What if there's a way to use that power to destroy that power? Wouldn't that be better than preserving that power for Rs?

Or find a way to throw the ring of power into a volcano. Do I have a road map for that? No. But I think it's a better idea than waiting for Republicans to take the ring.

Biden didn't claim that power, though. SCOTUS did. And we both know the next Republican president will use it. Why not use that power to destroy that power?

Biden didn't seize power, though. The opposing party handed it to him, counting on him not using it, waiting for the next Republican to use it instead.

Maybe, but it's not as if Republicans would wait for Democrats to normalize anything. They're going to do this the next time there's a Republican president regardless.

What SCOTUS did is incredibly destabilizing and dangerous. I understand the mental health benefits of pretending otherwise, but I don't see the strategic value.

Thing is, Biden can't become a dictator. He already is one. He can chose not to use the dictatorial powers he has just been granted, but he has them.

I know what you mean, but I'm not sure Trump exactly "won" his 2nd impeachment trial, given that the vote was 57-43 guilty.

Who exactly are you blaming? Democratic primary voters in 2020? Personally, I blame our current issues on people panicking over one bad debate in June.

Yeah, that's pretty clearly "certain Israelis want Trump to win, so they're going to the NYT to call Biden weak". And NYT obliges because they, too, want Trump to win.

***minor episode 5 spoiler*** I really liked that when Sol and Jecki jumped the baddie, they clearly had a plan of joint attack, with Sol force pushing the baddie into a Jecki decapitation attempt. So at least they tried! But yeah, they failed.

The Supreme Court is moving things to the right because Trump won in 2016 and added three Justices. If Trump wins in 2024, most likely he'll add three more, replacing the oldest R Justices with young ones and ensuring that politics slide farther to the right for decades.

People who are panicking about one bad debate are showing how little they understand politics today. Trump was caught on tape admitting to sexual assault, but he still won. I get that the debate caused your emotions to swing wildly, but the fundamentals of the race did not.

What? She lost very narrowly in the EC. She won the PV handily. The point is that if the left keeps refusing to support the leftmost candidate with a chance of winning, politics will continue to move to the right

That part wouldn't work. CNN would be pissed at him and would do a softball session with Trump for the next hour with no rebuttals. Trump would be saying that Biden was backstage in a coma and CNN wouldn't dispute it.

Democrats giving up their lock on the south and embracing Civil Rights - followed by Republicans rushing in to cater to racist southern whites - is such an obvious good guy/bad guy story that Republicans have to come up with alternative facts

There used to be a name for a political philosophy that disfavored sudden changes. But "conservative" means something very different now.
