Next innovation, customized e-reader scents. Comes in "independent bookseller", "local library", and our favorite, "used book store".

It'll all be ok as long as the rest of us turn off our air conditioning so the AI can have more electricity. Sacrifices must be made (by us, of course, not them).

For some it might just be a matter of correction. Like if it had been the other way around and someone tells you "they" is correct rather than he/she. (Of course, the current moment being what it is, there could also be a few who think the word is somehow part of an "agenda" forced on them.)

I really want to believe that, but this feels like 50+ years of dominoes set up by the right wing that are starting to fall faster. Even if we eventually "win", lots and lots of people are being and will be crushed under them in the meantime.

Second one is great as well. Also, they put out a short a little while back in partnership with a mental heath education program. (Not specifically related to any movie plot, so no spoilers for Across the Spider-verse.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFPL...

Arguing a president has absolute immunity should not have held any water, either, yet here we are.

Obviously, if you become president it is because you were chosen by god from birth to be president. Therefore, anything you do in your life is an official act and you have absolute immunity. duh. /s

I am reading posts declaring that all these SCOTUS decisions will come back to bite the far right. Even if that is true, it sounds to me like laughing at someone who is busy stabbing you to death because 'boy howdy, the dry cleaning bill to get those blood stains out of your suit is going to hurt'.

Many of the DC movies just have that feel to me. There are certainly exceptions (saw Blue Beetle recently and it was a fun watch), but for the most part they seem to think destruction is a good replacement for personality.

Instead of all the "AI" business these days making me believe there may eventaually be intelligence in machines, it is making me doubt it in humans.

Oh no. Is this part of the "AI" future all the tech companies seem to want for us? Not being able to rely on any information from a search because it may have been "hallucinated"?

I think these temps are fine for me. I've lived with and without AC and know what I can tolerate. However, they are NOT fine for many and seem silly as a standard. It feels like the recycling scam. Put pressure and blame on those with the least power while those who cause the problems slide by.

People are actually going to die of the heat when power grids fail just so some AI techbros can make money off of stolen content. And they know there will be zero consequences to them. Even if the "AI" scam fails, they'll just move on to the next one.

It is not just the direct interactions, though. It will be the knock-on effects that people might not even associate with a particular government agency. You'll have the library closures and changes to education, but you might also have worse roads, less access to parks, travel restrictions, etc.

Can I ask which book it was? @aptshadow.bsky.social has been on my "want to read" list for months now (because of something I saw on this site), but I hadn't decided on a starting point (standalone? series? which series?). Maybe this would be a good place to jump in when I have a chance? Thanks!

And authors will, I imagine, have to come up with a new term for the "AI" we'd known in fiction. After all the mess, AI might only be associated with word vomit search engines and 6-fingered people in stolen art. This is more disappointing than the hoverboard.

Who operates/reviews the cameras? If someone really is running the sign that flagrantly and often, why are they still on the road? Obviously I will have to look into more detail elsewhere, but if the situation is anything like red light cameras, it *is* money>safety, so I get why people think that.

Watched (had to find it on youtube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k8z...) because the NBC site did not work for me). Zero detail on whether the 7 tickets were all legit. Plus, you can always pick out extreme cases. Have there been false positives? How hard are they to fight? This was less news than ad.

Because the red light cameras haven't had any trouble, right? The more we outsource ticketing to 3rd party companies, the more cities have to pay for the services, the more money they need to bring in, the more they automate ticketing...at least someone somewhere gets rich in the dystopia, so yay.

And the claim is that there can be no way to narrow said license? Any limitations? For example, the thumbnail transform would be local to the service, or a download could be approved each time. (And yes, approval each time might be annoying, but let that be the user's choice to turn off.)

Apparently not. Mostly because the people doing the fucking are not the ones suffering the consequences of the finding out. Ship all the billionaires off to live on glaciers and we might see some change. (At the very least, we'll be a few billionaires lighter.)

Second, "everyone does it" is also not a great defense. If the terms of service on other platforms are just as broad and bad, then those should be changed, too. If no one pushes back on any of this, where are we? Just accepting whatever corporations want to do with creative works they don't pay for?

See, this is a response from someone who does not want to have any kind of discussion. First, just because I have an account somewhere does not mean I'm posting creative content I'm not willing to lose. This is not the case for most work done on platforms like the one in question.

It is still very broad language in the agreement. And "c'mon, they've been doing this for almost a decade already" isn't exactly a defense. And with large "AI" models vacuuming up content, it is now especially important to make sure your work has some protection from execs stealing it.

If not something like that then...um...good luck with the electronic exorcism? Start with an old tech and a young tech...

How is it not illegal to allow companies to wreck your credit score just because you want to cancel a credit card that has no balance on it? Why did we hand them this kind of power?

The article says she was "the co-host of a far-right online talk show". I get that she was just buying into the scare tactics she'd ingested from other right wing media, but as she was also in a position to widely *spread* the (m/d)isinformation, I would hope she'd already look into things more.

Why would anyone even want his future? The number of people in this country who seem to worship theft and fraud baffles me. We demonize people who steal $5 for food, but deify people who steal millions for greed. I don't get it. :(

The way TV execs act anymore, serving only short-term goals that result in the biggest bonuses and tax write-offs, preparing a show's story so any season finale can be a series finale without major cliffhangers is feeling like a necessity.

So, to "improve user safety", Musk is allowing harassers to keep harassing. He'll say free speech, we know it's because his blue check trolls were not having as much fun. Also, "X (formerly X)" ? Are they doing an automatic find/replace of 'Twitter' on everything, whether or not it makes any sense?

This is an issue I have with the "binge" model. I'm watching Dead Boy Detectives and really like it so far, but my brain won't let me sit and watch all the episodes in a day or even a week. I like having the time to stretch it out. And then I worry I'm hurting the show by enjoying it "incorrectly".
