a big part of it is that the current political climate just isn’t *fun* for people who want big stakes West Wing party politics intrigue, ie Dem “insiders”- they want desperately to fantasy cast the fun crises they wish we had instead of the sordid ones we do

True on the media side of things too — I don’t think this is necessarily always an explicit wish by journalists or pundits, but we know who both Trump and Biden are in tedious detail. Wouldn’t blowing up the latter campaign for someone else be…exciting? Such intrigue! Much content!
