the problem with much of the U.S. is that we really did believe It Can't Happen Here, and apparently many still do, for all their garment rending. What's happening in Europe right now is bad, but-while Putin's a wild card factor, i think, the collective memory is still tougher with scars.

India's recent turnout, while not decisive, made some change, I think. Democracies can turn into autocracies. But how'd we get democracy in the first place? Also: look at South America; it's been a frigging revolving door for a lot of places.
