I'm always glad to meet others who love the latter books best. So many people have read only the first three, in which case they don't really know Earthsea at all. Le Guin deconstructed and reconstructed her world from Tehanu onward; it's a masterclass in how to write fantasy and I'm in awe of it.

Happy Summer Solstice from all of us at Bumblehill.
Be sure to carry salt and oak leaves in your pocket, garland yourself with wildflowers, and drive your cattle through the smoke of a midnight bonfire for protection from fairy mischief!

"We keep each other alive with stories. We need to share these patterns, as much as we need to share food." - Barry Lopez, from a beautiful essay published in 1998 and available online here:

He's still a cutie. This is our Lottie as a pup. Mind you, she's 18 months old now but turned out to be so much smaller than expected that she still gets mistaken for a puppy....

Lift up your faces, you have a piercing need
For this bright morning dawning for you
The horizon leans forward
Offering you space to place new steps of change.

Flying away....
I'll be away and entirely off-line for a few days and back in the office/studio (and back online) on Monday. I hope you have a good and creative week. Art by the great Arthur Rackam.

“Until one has loved an animal," said Anatole France, "a part of one's soul remains unawakened." I can't remember a time when I didn't love animals. Lottie is 18 months old now, full of enthusiasm for life and love for the world. It's been a hard week, but her joy keeps me going.

Lottie in light and shadow on the path leading from my studio to the woods. She still looks like a pup but she's growing up -- she'll be 18 months old this month. Where has the time gone?
