Started off as a grizzled mercenary due to having been stolen by a team of mercs, and kinda had aforementioned self-discovery slowly over the years of their operation. Got into improv classes. Realized they liked feminine roles. Took on less violent jobs. Made friends. She learned to smile.

So, spoilers: she was built with an incomplete brain scan of her creator, who was a mad scientist guy. Was stolen as just an endoskeleton, tried to follow her programming but gtadually found more joy in finding herself. So yes, the former! Voice-trained and achieved the look the hard way.
