Horses of Saint Mark were brought to Venice after the sack of Constantinople in 1204. They were probably over the starting gate of the Hippodrome of Constantinople, but were perhaps taken from Chios earlier. Napoleon took them to Paris in 1797 and they were returned in 1815.

The monastery, famous for its Byzantine art, was converted into a mosque by Atik Ali Pasha (grand vizier of Bayezid II) in the early 16th century. It was converted into a museum in 1948, and converted back into a mosque in 2020.
