Love visiting Chesil Beach and reading books. In fact, I’ve probably got my head in a book while you’re reading this, so please be quiet. ⬆️And yes, this is my Backlisted bookshelf. ⬆️

Thanks go again to Backlisted for another outstanding book. Thanks to @regretteruane.bsky.social for choosing to discuss it. It was worth every penny of the cost I paid for it, and it’s the most expensive book I’ve ever bought! (It is available as a kindle edition in the UK with the title, Abra).

The way she describes the disassociation between Abra and her family was superb. The first person narrative was so immersive, that when the character has an incident in a car, my heart started racing and my breath sped up, I got the feeling of experiencing a panic attack myself. /2

Well, I finished Gaining Ground. The writing is exceptional. It’s the best book I’ve read in ages, and despite being almost 50 years old, it still felt relevant and significant, particularly as we are now so much more aware of mental health issues. /1

@gralefrit.bsky.social Hi Joel, I know you’ve been busy with the book launch, but just wondered if there are some new Comfort Blanket episodes coming up soon?

Started Gaining Ground by Joan Barfoot this morning, from the latest @backlisted.bsky.social episode. My partner read it last week and said it’s the best book he’s read for the last couple of years, and can not believe it’s not currently in print. So far, I’d agree one hundred percent.

1982 was poor for me. Only decent song was Shy Boy by Bananarama. I’d say you didn’t miss much!

Oh no! That’s a shame. My library was able to get me The Bloater before it was republished and has the Barfoot book too. Fingers crossed for a new publisher to pick it up soon then. Who do we need to cajole and pester about this?

Check your local library too - there’s one in my area available to borrow.

There is a kindle version of Abra (Canadian title) on Amazon UK. I don’t use the library for ebooks so I don’t know if they have it, but my library has a paperback edition available. I know it’s not on Apple Books, so that maybe the only option?

Haha! We almost took the risk to just get the ebook version and see if it got reprinted later, but in the end I decided that as I have no other expensive vices 😇, to go with the “sod it” option and clicked on the buy button.

Listened to this today. Glorious. Listening to his album Witchcraft now. Have also listened to E.S.T. Tuesday Wonderland this week, and that was great. My partner already has some of their albums, so will be listening to some more of them too.

“Oh my god.” I actually gasped this out loud to myself, when I got to the bit where the mystery is resolved. I did not see it coming. I’d only read one Christie before this and I’d coined it Enid Blyton for grown-ups. Endless Night is very different. Cannot wait for the Backlisted episode now!

We ummed and ahhed about it for a week before deciding whether to buy it. Even now I’m thinking about buying a glass case to display it in.

In the meantime, I’m reading Endless Night by Agatha Christie, which will be discussed on the next @backlisted.bsky.social live episode, heavily encouraged by @drlauravarnam.bsky.social! Wish I could go to the recording - maybe another time I’ll be able to make it.

Managed to get a hard to find copy of the next @backlisted.bsky.social book (up now on Patreon and will listen to this morning). Most money I think I’ve ever spent on a book! No doubt, someone will reprint it next year for a much lower price, but I couldn’t stand the gap on my shelf for that long.

Just spotted that The Card is on Talking Pictures at 2:50pm. It’s based on the Arnold Bennett book, and starts Alec Guinness, Glynis Johns and Valerie Hobson. Loved the book, so will be interesting to see this adaptation.

@iammilliam.bsky.social Hi Andy. I remembered you asking about Brian Wildsmith a little while ago, and saw Jackie Morris posted about an exhibition on Instagram, so thought I’d put it here in case you didn’t know about it. Details here: www.barnsley-museums.com/whats-on/the...

Catching up with my recent listens … Loved Roy Haynes, We Three and went onto listen to Encounters by Roy Haynes, Mark Isaacs and Dave Holland. Also love Bill Evans, The Complete Village Vanguard. The one I listed to had spoken introduction and other background tracks and was fascinating!

Took my goddaughter book shopping to celebrate the end of her GCSEs and the start of a ten week summer holiday. As ever she astounds me with her choices. Max Minerva’s also gave her a couple of free proofs too.

Me too, for both of these. Never saw the point with voice activated stuff, and if I use AI to create something, is it really mine? I don’t feel it is, and if it’s “free”, someone isn’t getting paid for their work, which doesn’t sit right with me.

Early on, I wasn’t sure about Trio by Marcin Wasilewski Trio, but it’s grown on me through the afternoon. I will have to listen again another day and try and see if I like the early tracks more now I’ve heard the whole thing.

I’m sorry to say, I didn’t get on with Travel on first listen. I will try some other albums and maybe try Travel again too. I think it was too much of a step out of my comfort zone, but I will definitely give it another go in case it was my mood on the day!

Carrying on my jazz trio album listening, I’ve just listened to Short Stories by Gareth Williams, which hit that perfect sweet spot for me. I’ve seen Gareth with Claire Martin quite a few times, and am deeply admiring of his work.

Thank you for all these suggestions! I’ve listened to some of them, but have got a but stuck in an Oscar Peterson Trio and Duke Ellington land recently, so this will give me a plan to broaden my horizons. Spent yesterday listening to Vince Guaraldi Trio which was very enjoyable.

Ok, Bluesky, hit me with your recommendations for the best jazz trio albums - keyboard, bass, drums. Don’t mind if they are accompanied by a singer, but I generally prefer listening to females singers.

My partner is definitely a Heyer convert after reading Venetia from the @backlisted.bsky.social bookshelf. He’s now on his third one (These Old Shades), and keeps popping in to tell me how bonkers it is. Backlisted, what have you done!
