Europe! On the one hand deboarding the plane took 30 mins of the 25 mins for bullshit reasons. On the other, the airline has to pay for a hotel.

If they cared they'd have a formatter running on save and on commit hook. Easy to ensure noone has to read code out of the house style without adding friction to getting shit done.

That was a fun article by the grugq. It's really fun to see the difference between being gated on collection and gated on analysis. On the one hand opportunities to do more _automated_ analysis, and figure out what you need to make that good.

Yeah the thermal n,p cross section is nuts. You lose about half of them into the ground geometrically; the MFP for a fast neutron in air is way longer than typical tower heights. But a good fraction of the neutrons that thermalise in the air are going to produce C-14

Yeah. A tonne or so, spiked 60% or so by ~600 atmospheric tests yielding ~500MT. Or about a kilo per test, call it 80 moles of produced C-14. And fission yield is ~20TJ/mol, so about 180 mol per test if pure fission. It's less than that that, but you get a factor of a few from neutrons / fission.

But also fundamentally most of these things are _mass_ limited because they're intended to be deliverable, and at some crude level ~1.5% of the mass of the fissiles or fertiles is coming out in neutrons. Some amount of that activates nitrogen., but you can bound the masses of C-14 decently enough

For sure, I was meaning to distinguish pure fission devices (or primaries of a thermonuclear weapon) from their secondaries; and then yeah you're going to have to distinguish fusion flux from fast fission flux in the secondary, because the relative cleanliness and yield of the devices vary so much.

Yes! It's totally real and there. Just, like, you can estimate it back of the envelope and you need to be doing thousands of tests... Which we went and _did_, and spiked the concentration 60% or so.

Well that you can estimate! Per the thread, about a ton of it. So about 1/5000 of that, or 200kg/y, from whatever sources (mostly cosmic rays as high energy neutron sources hitting the air)

And, sort of roughly, there's 3 teratonnes of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. So about 1 ton of C-14. Or, like, maybe a thousand times more than could come from a big thermonuclear test even if every neutron turned into a C-14 atom.

H bombs are more, but not that much more; the fast neutrons from the LiD reaction are mostly taken up fissioning the tamper for more yield. Maybe a few hundred moles.

Also just the numbers are tiny. A big nuke might be a few kilos of fissionables, so throwing a factor of a few for neutrons per fission you're looking at low tens of moles of neutrons coming out.

Also nuclear tests don't really produce much C-14. Mostly you're fissioning uranium or plutonium (to relevant approximation, 240 nucleons per nucleus). The split isn't perfectly uniform, but almost nothing with fewer than 80 nucleons comes out. So things like C-14? Nada. Too small
