I volunteered for a congressional candidate who was a boring moderate Democrat. He very actively campaigned on his experience as a “Yale Law grad” and “former 9th circuit clerk.” I’ll never forget that because those things only matter to the most deranged freaks around. Terrible strategy. He lost.

That said the area itself is very conservative, eastern Washington broadly, and north Idaho of course, are incredibly conservative. Spokane is trending blue and I think it sets the stage for an interesting clash between the furthest right elements of our politics and everything to the left of that.

We just elected a decently progressive Democrat as mayor, the previous mayor was pretty far right. Historically the congressional representative is Republican but I think Spokane proper votes pretty blue, just not enough to outweigh the surrounding more rural areas in the district.

The main goal is to rid them of their own platform and if extending your own is in some small way, even just potentially, in service of that, I think it’s worth it.

This isn’t a free speech “battle of ideas” thing. “Deplatforming” someone, say Milo or Alex Jones, is an institutional response via public pressure. “Platforming” someone, as in giving them exposure, is not mutually exclusive with deplatforming them and the exposure often helps that process along.

Like no love for Taylor and I think it’s totally self serving to drive clicks and views. That’s a problem but that’s different than “platforming” someone, which is just nonsensical to me when that person has a platform that shapes legislation and reaches millions daily.

How is she platforming anyone, she already has a massive following that commands insane amounts of media attention. At this point you can’t just ignore the most vicious transphobe in the country out of existence. There is value to making these people look bigoted outside of their own platform.

If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis, never call the cops. Even if it’s really bad, help is clearly needed, still don’t call the police. They won’t help you. They have never helped anyone in that situation. It’s a mistake, and potentially a deadly one.

It’s interesting watching Elon Musk become more and more of a fascist. Kind of clashes with his whole “Tony Stark future man” brand that he’s cultivated (which is entirely fake anyway). It’s also more in line with the brutality and immorality inherent in being the richest man on the planet.

Same. In twenty years of indigent criminal defense, the battery and assault on LEO cases were almost always justification for the police beating up or shooting my client. In the rare instances that weren’t brutality, the charge was officer retaliation for resisting and making things hard for the cop

In my experience every time I have a client charged with battery on an officer/resisting arrest/obstruction its what you get charged with when the police beat the shit out of you and then make it your fault after the fact.

Just saying it again, if you ever find yourself charged with a crime and your attorney refers to you as “the defendant” you should get a new attorney.

Even if you accepted every Israeli claim as 100% true and they succeeded at their stated objective of “destroying Hamas.” You’re still left with virtually every hospital, school, and civic institution destroyed and 2/3rds+ of housing. 100’s of thousands starving & sick. It’s barbaric from any angle.
