I get that, powerfully, because it's pretty pervasive, especially in RPGs. Not everyone who quickly and completely masters vast and abstruse game systems gatekeeps or scolds other players for not mastering to their degree, but enough do to make the more casual player self-conscious.

I knew a fair number of people who loved the fact that Pathfinder 1e had so many classes and rulebooks, because getting into all that required a big investment of time and money, and when 2e came out they dropped out because they felt left behind. It didn't stroke their egos enough.
