This "fact" always irks me because a) it's really just speculation that Obama wouldn't have won against Ryan and b) I was a voter in Illinois in '04 and I remember Ryan as a charisma-free investment banker who had no better chance of beating Obama than Alan Keyes did.

I mean, sure, Obama def had miles more game. But I think he was down in the polls until Ryan got taken down by the Tribune and whoever fed them the story. Who knows tho. His wins weren't a foregone conclusion, imo anyway. Tons of folks said his name alone was a disqualification back in the W era.
