maybe my only writing "rule": don't sleep on semi-pro short fic mags, don't turn your nose up at them, don't miss out. they're sharp markets w/specific visions taking big swings. my most reprinted stories and longtime readers are from semi-pro. never underestimate an attuned audience, man.

Shimmer and the Dark (briefly pro) were always my dream semi-pro markets. I never made Shimmer before it closed but made the Dark a few times. Also Metaphorosis, Hexagon etc have been putting out good stuff.

Most of the big name online magazines started as semi-pro, too. Fantasy, Lightspeed, Nightmare, Apex (then Apex Digest), all paid about 1-3c a word when I first started out

I haven't had the chance to explore the space, but it certainly sounds intriguing both as a writer and as a reader. Any recommendations, either of specific mags or places to start looking?

Do you mostly hear about them just through other writers, or is there another good way to find them?

I have semipro mags to thank for even taking a chance on my stuff, tbh.
