Physics, polymers and composites, high-rate mechanics, and what I'll euphemistically call "software carpentry" and not "hideous hacks". Occasional uninspired photography.

Looks as though antihistamines might help avoid covid infection, as well as mitigate the disease. Insert "it's all histamine" meme.

I was really impressed (in a bad way) with Moleskine. Uniquely in my experience, the ink bled and feathered extensively, but somehow also didn’t dry for over a minute. Usually you get at worst one of the two.

Putting on a mask is just so much easier than estimating usage patterns, ventilation, and the fraction of the population who are infected and either asymptomatic or going out to share their infection.

I vaguely remember the Governor-General perpetrating some Nonsense about this in the noughties and nearly prompting Australia to leave the Commonwealth.

Is the law actually good for anything? Or is it one of those things where its presence promotes good behaviour, even if every actual use of it is either abusive or counterproductive?

Nearly! You can't voluntarily resign but any office of profit under the Crown is disqualifying; the King keeps a few sinecures in his back pocket which he can give you for a day so you get fired. "Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds" is I think the favourite.

Eh, effect on a neurotypical brain isn’t that relevant to usefulness in ADHD; cardio and motor side-effects are the big problem. (Also I speculate that a lot of the people who take cocaine recreationally are already kind of Like That, and now they are Like That Faster and with More Energy)

Ah, yes. And presumably also meth, both of which being more readily available than the actual prescribed medicine! For deeply annoying reasons that it’s reductive to just label “Puritanism!” But I’m going to anyway.

Happily you have meds that work with (I think?) a side-effect profile you can tolerate! What would be the problem with unmedicated!rah trying cocaine? You'd break yourself physically doing housework?

I mean, "did cocaine at a party then started on the housework" is a classic way to discover ADHD, but a nine-year-old shouldn't be at that kind of party!

"A pint's a pound the world around" doesn't work for water outside the US because we use 20 fl. oz. pints, and it doesn't work inside the US because their fl. oz. is wrong and a pint is 473 ml. It *does* work for whisky in the US, and presumably a pint of whisky is what the author had just drunk.

TBF the best thing we can do for future plastic availability is to stop burning oil. Loads of side benefits, too, like getting to keep our coastline and agriculture about the same shape.

Doesn't that abrade the thing you're trying to clean as well? I thought the appeal of melamine was that it hit the sweet spot of "softer than stuff you care about, harder than most dirt".

And the guns on the opposite side stopped firing after two rounds because they had one trained crew split between two guns, and like forty recruits who could barely salute, and no-one was going to reload under fire. Both rounds hit because they'd been training on that sound for decades.

In an engineering context, "titanium" is usually a range of alloys with fairly precise compositions. So I'd expect the counterfeit still to be mostly titanium, just with some contaminants or without the desired allowing elements.
