Eternal mysteries. Mine are mostly thrifted; $20 and another $20 to get it taken in if needed feels like a fair price to not die of dehydration. I think Uniqlo sells them for $30 or so.

There is so much going on in the world, but I’m irrationally fixated on how the men of the Northeast are seemingly unaware of the existence of linen, madras, white pants, etc. Summers aren’t going to get any cooler, guys.

For Business Insider, a story I spent four months on: Joe Arden is the romance audiobook world’s biggest narrator, a bestseller maker and a bona fide star. Now, his sexting scandal is having a huge fallout that almost no one outside the industry knows about: www.businessinsider.com/joe-arden-ro...

Saw “Blood In Blood Out” for the first time in a long time last night, and what’s stuck with me is how much of “House of the Dragon” is just a worse-written and -acted version of the scenes where La Onda argues over whether to move first against the Black Guerrilla Army and Aryan Vanguard.

On the one hand, legally no one can do anything about it if the president decides to drop a nuclear bomb on Topeka and if you want to build a house every bored dipshit within a square mile gets a line item veto; on the other I just got lunch at a Korean halal place that serves fried okra. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

The most fundamental problem with Philly is probably that people like this have structural power when they should just be laughed at and told to buy the land and develop the fucking building themselves if they want this much say www.inquirer.com/real-estate/...

I think that’s totally right and one advantage to reading it relatively quickly is you get a feel for when you’re supposed to be a little lost and for when you’re struggling because it’s kind of boring, as opposed to you in either case missing something.

On this reading I kept little notes on the cast and it was amazingly helpful. I don’t think it’s really a difficult book; the sheer size makes keeping things straight hard and the narrator is a little opaque about things like time passing, but some notes to orient yourself go a long way.

This is also an amazing companion book, highest recommendation as it’s really helpful with the many passages where Proust goes on about some painting:

Just start reading! I just reread it straight through and tried to hit 50 pages a day; I didn’t quite hit that as I had a job change and such, but I finished in three months, which was quick enough I could keep everything straight in my head.

A really great thing for journalists to do is ask and hopefully answer questions like “How would this happen?” and “What would happen if it did?” and “Who specifically is in charge of this?”

In less technical terms, the billion dollar AI robot company that has plagiarized us and other outlets is now in hot water with Amazon—for these purposes a more forbidding regulator than the federal government—for arguably illegal and almost certainly TOS-violating business practices.

Honestly, $50 seems like a pretty good deal. I just weighed some Uniqlo underwear on my kitchen scale and got 71 grams, so if the fabric is of equivalent weight there should be about $53 worth of silver in each pair at current prices.

The CEO of Perplexity says it’s not the company itself surreptitiously scraping, but rather a third party operating on its behalf. (????) He also says we must have tricked his chatbot into falsely claiming we reported a specific cop committed crimes. (We just asked it about one of our stories.)

Perplexity, the billion dollar AI-powered search startup, plagiarized an article @dmehro.bsky.social and I wrote about how Perplexity is a bullshit machine. IP law experts say the company could be open to defamation and infringement claims and be sacrificing Section 230 protections by bullshitting.

I’m pretty cynical, but not so cynical I see nothing noteworthy in a startup backed by the richest man and the most valuable company in the world doing something so widely considered unethical it publicly claims not to do it.

The point, though, is that in surreptitiously scraping, Perplexity is violating its own clearly stated policies, which are presumably in place because they believe if their publicly stated policy was “Fuck you, we’re taking your stuff,” it would reflect poorly on them.

The reactions to this story have been very positive but we have had some responses along the lines of “Well robots.txt isn’t the law.” This is true, as we note in the piece, and a good thing—there are lots of good reasons one might violate it.

The company’s investors include Jeff Bezos’s family fund and NVIDIA, and it just announced a “strategic partnership” with SoftBank, so this is probably the future of journalism and search.

Despite its vaunted “real time access to the web” and evident willingness to circumvent robots.txt, it appears that in some cases the chatbot is extrapolating what an article probably says from metadata even when it claims to be “reading” it.

Perplexity’s chatbot also falsely claimed that WIRED reported that a specific police officer in California stole bikes out of someone’s garage. (We didn’t report that because he didn’t do it.)
